Ricoh Announces MediaMaster 8X/4X/32X

Internal Testing Shows the New Ricoh MP7080 Series Drives Perform Better Than Newest 8X CD-R/RW Drives on the Market

TUSTIN, Calif., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Ricoh Disc Media and Systems-Center (DMS-C) today announced its high performance 8X CD-R/4X CD-RW drive with a 32X CD-reading capability for mass shipping in early March. Called the Ricoh MediaMaster MP7080 series, the package outpaced three other 8X CD-R/RW drives during internal testing for file writing and data transfer rates for CD-R, CD-RW recording and CD-ROM.

Priced at $239.00, the MediaMaster MP7080 comes with an internal ATAPI/E-IDE drive, Adaptec Easy CD Creator premastering software and Adaptec Direct CD UDF packet writing software, one Ricoh CD-R disc, one Ricoh Direct CD pre-formatted CD-RW disc, quick start guide, mounting screws, audio cable and IDE cable.

The new device complements the earlier MP7060 series drives by advancing the technology one step forward in CD-R media write speed and CD-ROM read speed.

Ricoh increased the write speed by improving the precise pulse strategy and the high power Laser Diode. A newly developed LSI controls write power and pulse width, sets in details and helps stabilize high speed writing. A huge 4MB buffer memory was installed to ensure stable writing and prevent buffer underruns. Digital audio users will benefit from the 32X audio data extraction. The drive monitors noise errors caused by scratches or other imperfections and supports Ricoh's new Type 80 media.

Ricoh, one of only four manufacturers of Rewriteable CD-Recorders, was the first in the market to ship them in March, 1997 and has been a major force in developing the CD-R/RW industry with contributions in both media and drive technologies.

The MediaMaster MP7060 drive packages won PC Computing's annual MVP award in November 1999 and Computer Shopper awarded it its Best Buy in the January 2000 issue. The MediaMaster MP7080 series has all the award-winning features of the MP7060 plus more.

The MediaMaster MP7080 drive supports the following ten standard formats: CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-ROM/XA, CD Extra, Mixed-Mode CD, PhotoCD, CD-I, CD TEXT, Bootable CD and Video CD.

System Requirements

The Ricoh MediaMaster MP7080 series drive requires a Pentium 166MHz IBM compatible microprocessor or greater, a Windows 98/95 or NT operating system, 32MB or greater RAM, 150MB free hard disk space, available 5 1/4-inch mass storage bay with an E-IDE port.

Applications Drive Acceptance

Primary applications include home use to save and update digital photos and record MP3 music, multimedia and interactive CD authoring, creating music CDs, backup and archiving, storing and updating graphic files, exchanging large data files in the office and CD audio and data duplication.

Emerging applications with quad-speed rewritability include updating of information databases such as client lists, direct mail lists and company financial records. Due to low storage costs, CDs will also become tools for data sharing, including customized meeting presentations, brochures, product listings, price lists and inventory sheets. CD-RW has become a contender in the secondary storage market for back-up due to the low cost, multi-functionality and media interchangeability.
