  • CD/DVD Protections Overview
  • SafeDisc v2
    Company : Macrovision Corporation
    Protection : SafeDisc v2
How to Detect : The following files should exist on every the original CD:
    • 00000001.TMP
    • 00000002.TMP - not always available!

The loader file (<GAME>.EXE) is now integrated into the main executable, making the <GAME>.ICD file obsolete. Also the CLOKSPL.EXE file, which was present in SafeDisc v1, does not exist anymore.

To check for the SD2 version seach the <GAME>.EXE file for this string: "BoG_ *90.0&!! Yy>", after this string there are 3 unsigned longs, these are the version, subversion and revision numbers (in hex!). A tool called SafediscAnalyzer is also able to return the SD2 version number. Read errors will be encountered between sector 800-10000 when making a backup, so it takes some time to complete a backup!

The protection also has "weak" sectors which causes synchronization problems with certain CD-Writers. Digital signatures are still present in this version.

    Use Protection ID or ClonyXXL

Backup Solution : Currently there are 2 ways available of dealing with this protection:
    • SafeDisc Emulators
Create a 1:1 CD-Copy and then use DAEMON Tools, PlayBackup or Insektors to remove the protection from the game!
    • Executable UnWrappers
unSafeDisc or DumPlayerx can extract the real executable from the encrypted .ICD file, just replace the existing .EXE and burn it back to a CD-R or replace it after the game installation.

If your CD-Reader & CD-Writer both supports DAO RAW + Sub-Channel data then just do the 1:1 CD-Copy. If not use the DAEMON Tools, PlayBackup, Insectors, unSafeDisc or DumPlayerx to play the game!

    Protected :
    Most games after January 2001

    Protection Info
SAFEDISC 2.0 is an enhanced secure protection system and represents a quantum leap in product enhancements, supported by rigorous research and development, Q/A testing and certification during the past 18 months since SAFEDISC was first introduced.

    Major Features of SafeDisc 2.0

    • API support - the SAFEDISC toolkit includes an API that will allow publishers to extend the SAFEDISC security to encrypt various functions contained in their content.
    • New architecture - major re-architecture of the SAFEDISC code to disable automated hacking tools and to include additional encryption to delay hacking.
    • Disc burning prevention - introduction of additional digital signatures to improve resistance against copying.
    • Fail-safe manufacturing - assures that SAFEDISC masters will only be mastered on SAFEDISC-enabled production lines.
