  • CD/DVD Protections Overview
  • Dummy Files
Protection : Dummy Files / CD Lock
How to Detect : Very big dummy files (>600 Mb) in the root of the CD (usually with the AFP extension)

    Use Protection ID or ClonyXXL

Backup Solution : When the original CD is smaller than 659 Mb just do a CD-Copy (DAO/TAO) which will re-create the exact Dummy Files on the copied CD.
When the original CD is over 659 Mb then
OverSize/Overburn a 74 Minutes CD-R or just use an 80 Minutes CD-R to make an exact backup.

Don't try to manually copy these dummy files as they are usually very big (>600 Mb).

How to defeat a cd-lock protection

Most modern CD/DVD backup software is able to make a backup of this protection.

Protected : Commandos, Delta Force, Gangsters, Nice 2 & Tombraider 3
    Protection Info
This protections creates Dummy Files which are pointing to random parts of the CD, which are already in use by other files. When copying the CD content to harddisk and trying to burn the CD, it seems that it the CD image is much bigger than the Data tracksize on the Original CD (sometimes the total filesize is over 2 Gb!).

This Protection is usually found in combination with the Illegal TOC protection to create a low budget solution against CD backup. With the release of the 80 Minutes CD-R this "protection" is not that effective anymore.
