Yes Television Licenses Macrovision Digital Pay-Per-View Copy Protection.
London (20 March, 2000) - Macrovision UK Ltd., a subsidiary of Macrovision Corporation (NASDAQ/MVSN) in Sunnyvale, California, announced today that Yes Television has licensed Macrovision's digital pay-per-view (PPV) copy protection technology for use in its broadband video-on-demand (VOD) service. Under the agreement, Yes Television will implement Macrovision copy protection control capability in its head-end system software and copy protection capability in its digital set-top boxes.

"We are pleased to have finalised this important agreement which helps us protect our valuable video on demand (VOD) content. Yes Television delivers top quality entertainment to viewers, and copy protection helps to ensure that we will continue to do so as we roll out to a growing subscriber base," said Thomas Kressner, Yes Television's Chairman and Chief Executive.

"We are delighted to welcome Yes Television to our ever-expanding customer base", said Jeremy Corcoran, Director PPV Copy Protection at Macrovision UK Ltd. "Video on demand over broadband networks is poised for exciting growth in Europe over the next few years, and Macrovison's PPV copy protection technology is a key element in supporting that growth."

Macrovision PPV technology allows consumers to view, but not record, programmes that are copy protected at the direction of pay TV operators or programme suppliers. The technology is designed to deter unauthorized home taping of digitally delivered programmes. This allows copyright owners to minimise cannibalisation of their home video revenues while maximising PPV system operator revenues. Over 30 million Macrovision-enabled digital set top boxes have been shipped since 1995, comprising approximately 90% of all digital set top boxes shipped worldwide. Since 1996, over 40 million PPV and VOD buys have been copy protected, helping maximise new and repeat buys.

Yes Televisions service is true video on demand, which means that viewers can watch what they want, when they want. This is not the same thing as near video on demand (NVOD), in which the same movie or programme starts at regular intervals across a number of broadcast channels. True VOD gives viewers complete control over their viewing, with VCR-style functions like pause, fast forward and rewind.
