Macrovision Announces SafeDisc HD Product Release at Software Development West 2000
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--March 22, 2000-- Macrovision Corporation announced today the April, 2000 product release of its new SafeDisc HD® anti-piracy solution for application software CD-ROMs.

Software publishers can use SafeDisc HD to provide persistent copy protection and periodic authentication of original CD-ROMs, while not requiring the CD-ROM disk(s) in the drive every time the application is launched. SafeDisc HD provides the means to protect the application's executable program(s), and supports multi-disc programs and hybrid discs. SafeDisc and SafeDisc HD are the only Yellow Book-compliant copy protection products on the market today.

Product Overview

SafeDisc HD is a highly secure protection system designed to prevent consumer, institutional and business copying of mass distributed application software CD-ROMs sold through retail and reseller channels. SafeDisc HD combines anti-copy, encryption and anti-hacking technologies to allow installation and subsequent execution of the application only in the presence of the original disc(s) containing a SafeDisc HD Digital Signature.

A key feature of SafeDisc HD is that it does not require the CD-ROM in the drive every time the application is launched. The publisher can specify the time period for periodic re-authentication of the original CD-ROM. This protects against the end-user from passing the original disc(s) on to unauthorized users.

SafeDisc HD protection can be applied after the product development is complete (supports 32-bit PC applications only). Publishers can have the CD-ROMs mastered at any of the 80+ Macrovision-licensed replication facilities worldwide.

Functions:

-- Installer Protection -- SafeDisc HD enforces the
installation/execution only from an original CD-ROM.

-- Periodic Re-authentication -- The end-user is required to re-insert
the original CD-ROM every 'X' days, months, or never. The publisher
sets the time period at the time when the application is encrypted
   protection.

-- Optional enforced use of the original CD-ROM -- The end-user can be
obliged to have the original CD-ROM inserted into the disc drive
every time the application is run.

Platforms Supported:

-- The SafeDisc HD toolkit is available on MS Win95 and Win98.

-- The SafeDisc HD end user software operates on MS Win95, Win98, Win
   NT 4.0 and Win 2000.

-- Hybrid discs -- for discs that support Mac and PC -- (only PC
   applications are protected).

The SafeDisc HD technology is a software-based solution that does not require any changes to the publisher's application code and is compatible with standard PC and CD-ROM hardware. It is comprised of both an authenticating digital signature as well as encryption of the CD-ROM program executables.

The digital signature, which cannot be copied by CD recorders or mastering equipment, is embedded by the laser beam recorder at the time the CD-ROM master is made at the mastering/replication facility. When a user inserts an original disc in a CD-ROM drive, the authentication software reads the digital signature, allowing the program to be decrypted and run normally.

If an unauthorized copy is loaded, the authentication software will no longer be able to find the digital signature, and the copy will not run. A key feature of SafeDisc HD is that it does not require the CD-ROM in the drive every time the application is launched. The publisher sets the time period for periodic re-authentication of the original CD-ROM. Another important feature of SafeDisc HD is the multi-level anti-hacking technology that prevents the compromise of its security features. The anti-hacking technology is designed to not only deter consumer copying, but to also thwart hackers.

"With SafeDisc HD, we have successfully addressed the three critical areas needed for a viable CD-ROM copy protection solution: compatibility, effectiveness and manufacturing quality assurance," said Brian Dunn, senior vice president of Computer Software Copy Protection, Macrovision Corporation.

"SafeDisc® became the industry standard copy protection solution last year for the interactive software industry. I am very pleased to announce that SafeDisc HD is ready to support the application software industry for large volume mastering and replication and regain the billions of dollars lost to piracy and unauthorized copying."

SafeDisc HD is Macrovision's second-generation copy protection product designed specifically for the application software market. Macrovision is best known for its SafeDisc copy protection technology developed and released last year for the interactive software industry.

SafeDisc has been adopted by all the major interactive software publishers and has been applied to over 30 million CD-ROMs during the past year. SafeDisc was designed to require the original disc to be in the CD-ROM drive every time the user launched the program. SafeDisc HD is designed for PC software that launches from the computer's hard drive after installation of the program, in which the publisher does not want to require the respective CD-ROM in the drive every time the program is launched, such as anti-virus, word processing, tax, personal finance or desktop publishing software applications.
